MAYO

Submitted by rjzaar on July 1, 2015 - 4:04am

MAYO (Mission Action Youth Organisation) is an Oblate initiative which began at Mazenod College Mulgrave named after Fr MAYO OMI. It has evolved out of students who were involved in a year 9 Extension RE program. It seeks to primarily allow students to come to life-long personal relationship with Christ within the Catholic Church, be formed through prayer, formation, projects and friendship to discern their personal vocation in life and then live it out, whatever it may be.

Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God: MAYO empowers young people to follow Jesus and build the Kingdom without limits. Young people can connect in with MAYO in different ways, whether it is through a project, through a youth group, through prayer, through formation, through the meetings, or through starting their own group. Everything in MAYO is shared so anyone can do whatever they like with it. The resources created are free for anyone to use according to the creative commons licence which is explained in this video. In a similar way, anyone can start their own kind of MAYO group is they wish. The MAYO elements are structure, prayer, formation, projects, events, youth groups and MAYO groups.

Structure: How is MAYO organised?

Submitted by rjzaar on July 2, 2015 - 3:34am

MAYO is a developing organisation. Ultimately it will be run by students for students. Whoever is the Oblate youth chaplain in Australia has overall pastoral care for MAYO. MAYO is modeled on St. Eugene's original youth group. MAYO is a means to growing in Christ and does not seek to serve itself. Therefore it primarily promotes membership levels. All MAYO membership is an invitation and not an expectation, ie no matter what committment someone takes in MAYO the member can leave MAYO any time they like - there is no expectation. A committee runs MAYO which is made up of senior MAYO members and others running groups or projects.

MEMBERSHIP LEVELS

MAYO decided to use Greek letters since there we couldn't come up with something else, but it seems to fit quite well. The three key stages are alpha, chi and omega. Jesus is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the Omega (Omega is the last letter in the Greek alphabet) and Chi is for Christ. So the membership stages start and end with Christ and are in Christ.

α (Alpha): Someone who takes up the challenge to pray daily and to start to follow Jesus.

χ (Chi): Someone who takes up the challenge to pray the MAYO evening prayer each night, which is evening prayer with and examen and a hymn to Our Lady (usually the Salve Regina).

ω (Omega): Someone who has completed the MAYO formation program, has been regularly praying the MAYO evening prayer (or its equivalent) and takes the MAYO consecration to the Trinity through Our Lady and the statement of fidelity to the Magisterium.

θ (Theta): Someone who has completed an extensive formation program to be able to assess if a member is ready to be accepted as Omega.

φ (Phi): An even higher level of formation.

μ (Mu): This is the ultimate attitude that MAYO members should have, ie to be open to God's will in all things and is never conferred. μ is the Greek letter for M and represents the Greek word Menon (μένων) which means to abide from John 15:5, "Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing." It also represents the part that Mary has at Jesus' feet (Luke 10:38-42) and of course the attitude of Mary our mother. Mu doesn't sound exciting but for those who have experienced it, it is out of this world.

MAYO COMMITTEE

The MAYO committee is made up of a president, secretary and treasurer with vices for each position. There are various leaders of projects such as the webmaster. There are also leaders of other groups connected with MAYO such as youth group leaders. Major executive roles are selected from Omega members. It is up to the president to organise and run MAYO. He does this with the help of leaders for each project area. Each leader runs each project area as he sees fit. This website supports the organisation's communication and resource sharing. While MAYO is still developing a faciliator is helping develop the organisation.

MEETINGS/EVENTS

MAYO gets together for an official meeting once a month. It is out of school hours and so allows others to join.

During the week at Mazenod there are different lunchtime meetings, such as Bible Studies, Rosary bead making, and webdev (working on the website).

Sprints: A sprint is when MAYO members get together for a day or more during the holidays to work on MAYO projects. MAYO adopted Sprints from the Open Source Programming world. Usually after each term there is a one day sprint and then a 3 day sprint at the end of the year.

Retreats: MAYO members have organised various retreats over the years, usually a 2 day retreat during the holidays.

Leadership Days: Leadership formation days which also serve as days to develop MAYO ideas and structure.

WEBSITE

MAYO runs this website and allows other similar groups to use it as well. Therefore someone can host a youthgroup or a project on this website. This website can go mulitlingual as well.

YOUTH GROUPS

MAYO seeks to foster parish youth groups. The aim is for the youth group to become self sufficient. Aftershock is an example of this. The overall aim is to foster an authentic Catholic youth culture. Locally MAYO seeks to foster youth groups in all the feeder parishes of Mazenod College. It hopes to connect them through this website and through a smart phone app that will list all local youth group events.

MAYO GROUPS

MAYO wants to foster other groups like itself. Anyone can go through the MAYO membership levels and formation. Anyone can start a project in their own parish or school. As members increase in the MAYO membership levels they can start their own MAYO group and committee. It is up to each group to decide if they want to 'fork' (start their own version) MAYO. MAYO would be very happy to provide all the resources for this to happen. One reason for having resources in Google Drive, using only open source technologies and publishing all resources as creative commons is for forking to happen. The website technology allows for communication to occur between sites. To this end, we have designated each MAYO group according to a greek letter system. Each diocese is lettered Greek alphabetically starting with α and then each group in a diocese is numbers Romanly. So MAYO Mazenod is αI the third group in the second diocese would be βIII. This is a bit like the Greek Fraternities and Sororieties in the US.

INITIATIVE/ENTREPRENEURIALISM

MAYO is structured to foster young people taking up the opportunities and then using their skills to make the world a better place. Rather than being a consumer of the culture of death, become a producer of the culture of life.

    What is a MAYO Sprint?

Sprints are where people can come together to help work on projects.
We will primarily be preparing for the Alpha retreat the next day called 'The Ignite retreat'. We might also work on some of the other projects such as a magazine, or the website. We will definitely be practicing some of the music for the retreat. Everyone is welcome to come and have fun!
You don’t have to be an expert, there is plenty of help along the way.

Below is a brief summary of activities being run:

Music: Join the band in playing music and making some new tunes.

Connect: Love to write? Opinionated? Help the Connect magazine by

contributing articles, help with the layout and spell check the articles.

Webdev: Are you a web designer? Love setting up servers? Help bring our new

site together, or even learn a few things in web design.

    Formation: Develop formation resources.

???: Do you have an idea for a project? We are here to help you develop

    new ideas and initiatives.
